Greek winemakers not only work with internationally recognized grape varieties well suited to their terroir, such as Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet and Shiraz, producing wines capable of holding their own against some of the world’s finest in blind tastings, but in recent decades they have also devoted particular attention to rediscovering Greece’s indigenous grape varieties — Assyrtiko, Malvasia, Vidiano, Xinomavro, Liatiko and Agiorgitiko. These wines have the potential to earn the highest acclaim among wine connoisseurs. I would particularly highlight the wine regions of Santorini, Crete, Macedonia and the Peloponnese.
